My name is Steve Conover; I'm a married, bridge-playing empty-nest baby-boomer, and a semi-retired ex-Fortune 50 executive, who enjoys most of all a good laugh with friends or family.
Emerson wrote this a long time ago; it's not yet my biography, but it's a good description of my goal:
"To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!"
Lastly: Benjamin Franklin helped me decide to start this weblog. Below is what he wrote in Poor Richard's Almanac; it's good advice, so I took it.
"If you would not be forgotten,
As soon as you are dead and rotten,
Either write things worth reading,
Or do things worth writing."
Hobbies: Duplicate bridge; economics; debunking political and ideological half-truths; small woodworking projects; and pithy quotes. Also, as of July 30, 2005: grandfatherhood. **** History and purpose of this website: My sci.econ friend, Jim Glass, pointed me towards the "blogoshpere" in early '05. (A link to Jim's blog is in the left column on my main page.) After reading Hugh Hewitt's book ("Blog"), I decided to use this site as a place to publish short entries on several topics of interest to me -- some of which may be of interest to others. ***** I am semi-retired, currently involved in a time-consuming project that I'll summarize after it's completed. ***** In his book, Hugh Hewitt points out that the blogging spectrum ranges from pure aggregators (people who mostly just provide links to interesting things elsewhere on the net) to pure analysts (those who analyze what's going on in lengthier, journalistic-style posts). I'm more of the analyst style blogger, but my posts won't be lengthy, and probably won't be daily. This is just a hobby for me, although the message about debt and growth seems to be gaining traction, so I'll keep at it. ***** I do think I have read quite a few books that will be of interest to others who share some of my interests. That's why I will frequently post links to such books at Amazon.com. If one of those books interests you, please buy it using one of those links, because we'll both gain—you'll get a good book, and I'll make twenty-five to fifty cents on it. ***** I hope you find enough interesting material here to visit every few days.
